Contesting the Homebody

Keep the faith
that people are not bad, but maybe.
Are you afraid to shake an unwashed hand
stained with decades of tobacco smoke?
Can you look into stale, yellow eyes
that look at you asking,
You're still here?
Eyes that say, I'm not afraid of you.
Can you handle aggressive raspy voices,
gruff and frustrated?
Can you manage a Hello?
Do you smile because smiles are friendly, and you're uncomfortable;
or listen earnestly
because understanding a person helps them?
